Nit Picket Podcast #54, Edge of Darkness/When in Rome/Lost Premiere

We're definitely bangin' the nails.  Nit Picket Podcast #54.

Why would anyone in their right mind fuck with Mel Gibson's family?  It never ends well for the kidnappers or their knees/skulls, for that matter.  This week Aaron and I are discussing the new "gimme-back-my-daughter" revenge/thriller, Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson.  I take another RomCom bullet and take a gander at When in Rome, starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.  In the world of trailers we discuss Cemetery Junction and we finish out the episode with a big ol' spoiler filled discussion of the Lost season premiere.  Do you know what the hell is supposed to be happening?  Where the hell is Walt!?

Hey guys great podcast as always except I have one major NITPICK. I HOPE YOU DONT GET THIS IN THE WRONG WAY CAUSE I STILL RESPECT AND LOVE YOUR OPINIONS.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH YOUR COMMENTS ON LOST. LOST IS THE "SERIOUS MAN" OF TV SERIES. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO WRAP THE SHOW UP COMPLETELY. IF THEY SPOON FEED US ALL THE ANSWERS THEN THE WHOLE SPIRIT OF THE SHOW IS RUINED. YOU SHOULD FIGURE THINGS OUT YOURSELF AND AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THE MYSTERY OF THE ISLAND IS PRETTY MUCH RESOLVED. THE DEVIL (JACOB'S NEMESIS) HAS BEEN DROPPED FROM THE HEAVENS AND IS PLANNING TO GO BACK. YOU SHOULD HAVE PREDICTED LOCKE WAS THE ARCHENEMY BY SEASON 5'S FINALE. OBVIOUSLY I DIDNT GET THAT BY JUST WATCHING THE SERIES BUT BY RESEARCHING EVERY LITTLE DETAIL (WHAT THE HEIROGLYPHICS MEAN, WHO IS ANUBIS, WHO IS THE REAL JACK SHEPPARD, WHO IS THE REAL JOHN LOCKE). I EVEN READ SOME OF THE BOOKS SAWYER WAS READING (THE THIRD POLICEMAN).THERE IS A WHOLE WIKIPEDIA DEDICATED TO LOST (LOSTPEDIA). USE IT PLEASE. AS FOR THE ALTERNATE REALITY ON THE PLANE THE PRODUCERS SAID THEY WILL MELD THE TWO TIMELINES INTO ONE IN EPISODE 6 OR 7. THE ALTERNATIVE TIME LINE SHOULD GIVE YOU CLUES TO WHAT THE RECURRING THEMES ARE (A LOT OF CHARACTERS HAVE ISSUES WITH THEIR FATHERS, LOCK WITH HIS DAD, JACK WITH HIS, JACOB WITH THE NEW LOCKE (PREDICTED TO BE HIS DAD)). WHILE THE ISLAND EXPLAINS THE MYSTERY OF THE ISLAND, THE ALTERNATIVE TIMELINE IS TRYING TO TELL US WHO THESE PEOPLE REALLY ARE AND HOW THEY ARE ALL CONNECTED. THIS SHOW IS ALL ABOUT THE VERY MYSTERY AND DAMON LINDELOF HAS ALREADY SAID THAT HE WONT WRAP THINGS UP VERY NEATLY SO IF YOU DON'T SEE WHAT THE SHOW IS ABOUT ALREADY I SUGGEST YOU STOP WATCHING. THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW SHOWS THAT REFUSES TO DUMB DOWN ITS MATERIAL TO MASS AUDIENCES AND YOU ARE HATING ON IT. YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM WHEN THIS HAPPENS WITH MOVIES BUT YOU DO WITH TV SHOWS?!!! MY ADVICE IS TO WATCH THE SHOW WITH MORE OPEN EYES AND TRY TO RESEARCH ALL YOUR QUESTIONS. LOOK AT ALL THE FAN FORUMS. EVEN THIS EPISODE HAD GREAT WRITING;"I DONT LIKE THE TASTE OF ENGLISH ON MY MOUTH'. I COULD GO ON FOREVEVER BUT I AM LIMITED BY 3000 CHARACTERS. THIS SHOW IS VERY DEEP, VERY SPECIAL AND IS PERFECT AS IT IS, PLEASE DONT HATE ON IT AGAIN.

AN AVID FAN OF LOST AND YOUR SHOW.

Thanks for the comment, Omar. Take a deep breath, take the caps lock off, and breathe.

Research all my questions and every little detail that confounds me on a wikipedia page so I can try to figure out what exactly I'm supposed to be taking away from the show? Sounds fun!

See what I'm getting at? There's just too much. Too much time traveling, too many John Locke's, too many Others, too many questions being asked, too many cheap fake character deaths. I just think there is a serious problem with television or film if you have to seek out supplementary material for things to click. It needs to stand on it's own legs and I'm not sure LOST does anymore. I don't know what anything is or why I should care.

Nothing is perfect. Even LOST. All we can do is discuss our reactions and our reactions, as fans of the show, weren't positive. If we watch another episode and dislike it, there's a good chance we'll hate on it and continue to bitch. We do this out of love as two fans who've invested many, many hours of our lives following the story of Oceanic flight 815.

If you're looking for something truly special that is confounding on most levels and at no point sells out or dumbs down, check out TWIN PEAKS. Still my favorite David Lynch work.

Checking with other people, it seems I am one of the few to disagree with you guys. But the show doesn't stand on its own legs and it is intentional to some extent. I guess you cant please everyone. Hopefully everyone will be satisfied by the season finale tho.

I guess Lost isn't perfect (season 3 especially) but there are shows that are perfect ( Curb your enthusiasm and The Wire). I was really impressed by the last episode tho thats why I had to let off some steam lol.

Great episode guys! Gonna check out "Edge of Darkness" this weekend. Might see "From Paris With Love" or "Frozen." I don't know. Also for next week, maybe you guys could talk about the Superbowl movie commercials.

I'll be taping the Superbowl and watching it back later to fast forward the game and watch the commercials as per my tradition. It's great. I'm a dork.

FROZEN isn't playing in Seattle or anywhere in the Washington area so I'll be seeing CRAZY HEART (Aaron already reviewed it but I'll give my take and we'll discuss more I'm sure) and either check out FROM PARIS WITH LOVE or DEAR JOHN.

      Thanks for listening, Jordan.

Omar has that Kanye West CAPS LOCKS
    thing going on.

The season premiere of Lost underwhelmed me but I know it will have a strong finish.

When In Rome was so terrible I mean I just couldn't believe what I was seeing on the screen. The screenwriters should be blacklisted. The only scene I laughed at was the eating in the dark part. I'm a fan of Kristen Bell she deserves better.

Fell asleep during Edge of Darkness it had too many slow spots for me.

I have ovaries so tomorrow I'm off to see Valentine's Day. I love BCoop and will see him in just about anything.

I went to go look up the movie that won Best Picture the year Billy Madison came out. It was Braveheart. Which kind of surprised me really.
