Nit Picket Podcast #53, Legion/World's Greatest Dad

RIP J.D. Salinger.  Nit Picket Podcast #53

God, as always, is disappointed with his tiny creations and has sent Angels to destroy all of humanity unless Dennis Quaid and Tyrese Gibson can put a stop to his divine destruction.  This week Aaron and I discuss the ultra dark comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait, World's Greatest Dad, starring Robin Williams and Daryl Sabara.  I also took a bullet for the team and checked out, Legion, a new "the-world-is-gonna-end-unless-we-save-this-baby" action film.  We also take time to discuss the trailers for Cyrus and MacGruber, and then finish up by giving some Netflix Watch Instantly recommendations.  Sorry for all the cursing.  Blame Legion.

I loved the Watch Instantly recommendations. The Iron Giant was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and I must have watched it multiple times in a week. I thought that I was the only person who has seen Les Diaboliques which I found out was based on a book written by the same person who wrote the book that Vertigo was based on and I just bought The Wages of Fear which I have high hopes for. I also recommended it to a friend who is a die-hard Hitchcock fan. I actually saw the Galifinakis special several years ago. A few other things that I saw and liked on Watch Instantly were The Dead Zone, Mother's Day (one of Guillermo del Toro and Eli Roth's favorite horror movies), Joe Rogan: Live (I actually found the Zach Galifinakis special off recommendations for this, The Boondock Saints, Le Cercle Rouge (my favorite heist movie), and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

P.S. I just found out that you both like The Room which I loved and almost saw at a local theater that plays it once a month and does some other occasional cult movie screenings and and I was going to do all the cult things like throwing plastic spoons at the screens and throwing a football around with my friend who I was supposed to go with. My new favorite video on Youtube is David Cross and H. Jon Benjamin doing impressions of characters in the movie before a screening of the movie.

I'll definitely have to check out Mother's Day (I don't think I've ever seen it) and I've heard amazing things about The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. And yes...Diabolique (or Les Diaboliques) is absolutely terrifying to me. So impressive considering it was made over 50 years ago!

And anything David Cross does I'm on board for...I'm looking it up as I type this. Thanks for listening!

Brad bird is awesome, everything he is associated with is great in my opinion. If you ever get a chance, check out The Plague Dogs (uncut version) which Brad Bird worked on as an animator.

I haven't commented before but I believe it's a good time to start! Great episode, guys! Those Watch Instantly recommendations seriously helped me out with the choosing process! The Alphabet sounds like my bread and butter.

Also have to agree with you guys on World's Greatest Dad, the entire talk show sequence. I didn't know whether to cringe or break out into hysterics. Such a great pitch-black comedy! Every time I watch it, I imagine what it would be like if the Coen Bros. had done it and I always get the same turnout: Complete INSANITY.

Wow, thanks a ton for the name drop! This seriously is my favorite podcast around. Mentions to you are my absolute pleasure!

"You are such an attention whore" hahaha, that made my day.

The Alphabet is absolutely terrifying! If you ever showed your kids that while teaching them their ABCs, nightmares would definitely ensue. It scares me and I'm 24!!! (Oh, that sounds old, haha)

That sequence in WGD is so amazing. Robin Williams is so pitch perfect. Him and Denzel are the two actors I can think of off hand that have contagious laughs for me on screen. I love it!

And dude, THANK YOU for that amazing video!!! I still can't get over it. A 1000 times thank you!

Great podcast guys, keep it up. Can't wait for next week's podcast hoping you discuss the Lost final season premiere.

World Greatest Dad is easily in my top ten of 2009 because it really shocked me and was something unique. I wish the ending was a little bit like Ghost World's but I agree with Leland; the ending did work for me.However Robin Williams has always been one of my top 5 actors and still is. He does venture into commercial crap but always delivers a good indie movie every once in a while.
(Can you do a top 5 Robin Williams movie list).

Another Top 10 list suggestion would be
top 10 songs used in a movie perfectly.
A recent one that comes to mind would be Somebody to Love in A Serious Man which is also my number 1 film of 2009.

That was definitely the most emotional and complex part of the movie. There's so many different things to consider and it's a tough scene that I felt Goldthwait handled incredibly well.

Great episode! I recently saw World's Greatest Dad as well and really enjoyed it. I still need to see The Red Balloon,The Iron Giant and anything starring the Marx bros. The original Office is amazing! Like most Americans I started watching the US version but I saw the light. I also really love Extras.

I really love when you guys do lists on the podcast. I was wondering if you guys were possibly thinking about doing a favorite performances of the decade? I know you already did favorite films of the decade but it would be interesting(I think anyways) to see your favorite performances.
