My Favorite Christmas Specials #9

Mary Tyler Moore
Season 1 Episode 14
"Christmas and the Hard-Luck Kid II"

Anyone who visits this site realizes that I grew up watching a lot of TV and I still watch a lot of TV.  I used to love Nick at Nite when they'd air reruns of Taxi, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy and of course Mary Tyler Moore.  Mary's charming naiveté always seemed to get her into trouble and in this episode is guilted into working all alone both Christmas day and Christmas eve.  The scene of Mary sitting alone in the newsroom singing "White Christmas," quietly to herself is a standout moment of an already classic series.

I love everything about Mary Tyler Moore.  I love Mary.  I love when she throws her hat.  I love how everyone dressed.  I love Mr. Grant.  It's a true television classic and if I had to pick a favorite Christmas special I've posted, this is easily one of the best.  Mad Men's Don Draper is the 60's in my eyes and if I had to pick someone who perfectly captures the 70's, I'd pick Mary.  Before Carrie Bradshaw ever sat in front of a Mac we had Mary sitting in front of a typewriter and she did it all with perfectly flipped hair.

The Christmas miracle in this episode?  A spin off series for Rhoda.
