TV Review: Crash and Worst Week

I've been totally wiped from watching movies lately so I took last week off and hardly watched anything but Derren Brown's TRICK OF THE MIND series.  Now I'm back into my movie mode and doing my daily youtube reviews.  Getting back on track.  I got a huge stack of used DVDs last weekend and I'm going to burn through those in the next few days and throw the reviews up on youtube.

Also wanted to mention I'll be seeing REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA starring Anthony Stewart Head, Sara Brightman, and Paris Hilton in 2 weeks with a couple friends.  I'm incredibly excited about REPO and if you haven't seen the trailer for this flick than hurry your butt here and watch it in HD.  It looks like a poop ton of fun.

I also will be seeing the new Swedish vampire film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.  I've heard nothing but a lot of love for it and I'm incredibly excited to get to see it.  Watch the REPO trailer and THIS back-to-back in HD for a Halloween treat.

CRASH, Fridays at 10 PM on Stars

Is it shocking to anyone else that someone somewhere thought it was a good idea to turn the Oscar nominated film about racism, CRASH, into an ongoing series?  I guess everything is fair game now!  I've been wanting to start my BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN prequel series for the CW.  Of course my KRAMER VS. KRAMER series will be premiering on ABC Family this fall.

The new Starz original series CRASH is as bad as television gets.  The acting across the board is poor.  Here's the kicker.  The worst offender in this show is Dennis Hopper.  It's not entirely his fault though because the writers of this series have for some reason decided that his character will only speak like a poor man's Hunter S. Thompson.  For the record, I don't even really love real Thompson to begin with.  In the series' opener Dennis Hopper sits in the back of a limo and gives a soliloquy about his penis that is both puzzling and desperate.

Do not begin to analyze the characters in CRASH.  To criticize the logic of the characters and their actions is giving this show a kind of attention it does not deserve.  The show honestly has a strange almost CBS prime time vibe to it.  CSI minus the mystery.

I only watched the first three episodes of the series and I will not be watching anymore.  I could see this show becoming the Monday night trash show we're all missing in our lives, but please, don't encourage them.

MY FINAL RATING: 1/5, The best thing about CRASH is seeing Dennis Hopper as a reminder to watch EASY RIDER.

WORST WEEKMondays at 9:30 on CBS

WORST WEEK is the perfect show for my father.  It's a meet the parents TV show?!  No one is ever sad.  No one will ever be sad unless it's sort of funny.  If there is a cake no one is allowed to touch it will be destroyed.  It's the guy-who-is-always-fumbling-at-the-sight-of-his-father-in-law humor that my father eats up.

If you liked MEET THE PARENTS you'll probably like this show.  It's nowhere near as good as the original Stiller movie but it's still an entertaining twenty-two minutes.  The two stars of the show, Kyle Bornheimer and Erinn Hayes, are terrific and bring a level of comedic talent and charm that is essential for the show to float.  Bornheimer is a really talented comedic actor who I'll definitely be keeping my eye on.

Sadly, the writing of this show is incredibly standard.  Episode after episode, deck of card towers are built, and then our klutzy hero accidentally knocks them all down when no one is looking.  We've seen this all done before.  It's a show that simply wants to get the moments where people are falling down or fighting.  You have to earn those moments.  When the S hits the F in MEET THE PARENTS it's so horrifying and hilarious to watch because the film earned those moments.  When things get crazy on WORST WEEK I often feel they are the weakest moments of the show.  The smaller funnier moments between our two leads are much more clever than any pie in the face could ever hope to be.

WORST WEEK isn't a great show but it is pretty good.  I also have trouble believing this show will be able to stay fresh for much longer but I can't get caught up in that.  If you're free Mondays at 9:30 PM you might as well spend it giggling.

3/5, "It's called BABY STORIES.  It's about babies...and their stories."

Have a happy Tuesday everyone.  So say we all.
